You can get a high-fashion MagSafe ring holder in your choice of exotic leathers from accessory maker Labodet in Paris, or a MagSafe-compatible case or car mount from Sandmarc action gear in San Diego, or a warrior-looking MagSafe protective case from OtterBox in Colorado, or trendy cases from Torras in China. You can select from an extensive line of MagSafe devices from global electronics manufacturer Belkin. And, of course, Apple stores are loaded with the company’s own lineup of MagSafe products for iPhones, watches and AirPods as the phenomenon grows to become a global ecosystem of innovative new products in the consumer electronics market.
Out of sight are thin layers of finely crafted neodymium magnets, coils, shielding and magnetic technology. MagSafe is a magnetic system from Apple designed into the internal engineering of iPhones that was originally created as a safety feature for MacBook charging cords. It is a series of magnets placed around the iPhone internal charging coil, which senses other MagSafe compatible accessories and snaps seamlessly and securely into place with them. It has been incorporated into a string of iPhone models, creating a growing ecosystem of accessories for easy attachment and faster wireless charging. The concept has taken off with great popularity as product designers apply magnets and magnetic technology in clever, new ways to ride the Apple success wave.
From Labodét, a hands-free MagSafe ring helps hold your iPhone more ergonomically with one hand and can also function as a kickstand. There is a variety of exotic leathers and colors to choose from to match your style. The ring magnetically attaches to an iPhone or a MagSafe-enabled case with built-in MagSafe magnets. It gives a comfortable, easy, yet secure grip on your iPhone. It’s an engineering beauty, proclaims the company: the frame and the ring are made from surgical-grade 316 stainless steel and plated in 18K gold, silver or black PVD making the perfect setting for an exotic leather inlay.
Belkin designs prolific MagSafe portfolio
Belkin design engineers have been downright enthusiastic, building a market-leading prolific array of MagSafe products in close adherence to Apple specifications and standards. Apple recommends using N45SH grade magnets for MagSafe cases and N48H grade magnets for MagSafe accessories, the company notes. The series of magnets are placed around the iPhone internal charging coil, which senses other MagSafe compatible accessories and snaps seamlessly and securely into place. MagSafe will only attach to other compatible MagSafe accessories, avoiding interference with other magnets and even so they don’t get stuck to the phone.
Having a MagSafe charger and other accessories will give you full use of iPhone features and, important for the MagSafe ecosystem, can create new experiences at the same time. While an iPhone will still work with other Qi-enabled wireless chargers, chargers with MagSafe can deliver faster wireless charging up to 15W where other wireless chargers deliver up to 7.5W. Less time is needed for charging and the precisely aligned snap-on attachment keeps the phone charging fully even if it vibrates with an incoming call. Aside from simplified and enhanced wireless charging, the MagSafe snap-on attachment can enable popular accessories such as magnetic car vent and fitness mounts, face motion trackers and power banks.
There are two basic levels in the marketplace. Many products from independent developers such as Belkin are built with official MagSafe technology from Apple inside them. They are marked with a “Made for MagSafe” badge which means they have been developed and rigorously tested to MFi guidelines and optimized for iPhones. Many other companies, Belkin included, have developed MagSafe-compatible products which are designed to work with the system and meet industry standards but, for example, do not provide the higher charging rate.
Apple has designed its own line of MagSafe cases and accessories which come in a variety of styles and colors. However, if you’re looking for a case with more protection for the camera and glass, you might turn to a Magsafe case by Sandmarc, a San Diego-based accessory maker which incorporates MagSafe technology into many of its chargers and cases. With magnets integrated into the back, the cases are designed to automatically snap into place with the magnets on the wireless charging pad, and to be compatible with other Magsafe accessories such as Apple’s Magsafe wallet and wireless charger.
