Regal Rexnord Acquires Altra, Launches Motor Series

Two bastions of magnetic engineering expertise have come under one roof as fast-growing Regal Rexnord has consummated its nearly $5 billion acquisition of Altra Industrial Motion. Now, in one of its first product launches since the deal closed, Regal Rexnord is introducing the new Flex- in-1 motor that can replace up to any one of 18 different traditional general-purpose motors.

Flex-in-1 series replaces 18 different product variations

Engineers at the company design an extensive line of motion and power products that involve magnetic engineering including inductors and suppressors, a broad range of motors and automation systems, switches, electrical clutches and brakes. In the new Flex-in-1 series, they have designed in additional features and functionality that enable the consolidation including the ability for the motor to operate at 60 to 50 hertz, capability for inverter duty, and a removable repositionable base for improved mounting. The launch fits with the company’s emphasis on bringing new efficiencies and system capabilities to its product lineup as it rationalizes its recent acquisitions.

Regal Rexnord CEO Louis Pinkham

“Altra’s Automation & Specialty platform transforms our existing automation portfolio into a meaningful, global automation solutions provider, commented Louis Pinkham, Regal Rexnord CEO, about the acquisition which closed March 27. “Altra’s Power Transmission Technologies business ignificantly enhances our legacy power transmission portfolio, in particular our industrial powertrain offering, by adding complementary products in brakes, gears, and clutches. The combined power transmission, automation and powertrain capabilities of the new Regal Rexnord offer customers a significantly enhanced value proposition across a wider range of end markets – many with highly attractive secular growth tailwinds.”

In conjunction with the closing, new operating segments have been established: Industrial Powertrain Solutions (IPS); Power Efficiency Solutions (PES); Automation & Motion Control (AMC); and Industrial Systems. IPS will be led by Jerry Morton, PES by Scott Brown, AMC by Kevin Zaba, all ongoing executives of Regal Rexnord. Industrial systems will continue to operate with regional North American and Asian leadership team members reporting together to the CEO, while the company continues its strategic review of the global motors and generators businesses.

In 2021, as Regal Beloit Corporation the Beloit, Wisconsin-based company merged with Rexnord Process & Motion Control, bringing together portfolios and engineering teams for the design and manufacturing of electric motors and controls, power generation products and power transmission components, and changed its name to Regal Rexnord.
