Rockwell Automation Adds Permanent-Magnet Motor Control to Industrial Drives Line

Expanding the power ranges and capabilities of its TotalFORCE technology for industrial drives, Rockwell Automation has added control of permanent magnet motors to its line of Powerflex 755T Drives. The move comes amidst the increased use of permanent magnet motors for energy savings in industrial equipment.

Now the expanded power range supports applications from 10 to 6,000 horsepower, 7.5 to 4,500 kW, for improved productivity and reduced lifecycle costs. The permanent-magnet motor control for improved energy efficiency is among the new features.

“Traditionally, variable frequency drives have been used to control induction motors in industrial applications,” explains Ryan Miller, senior product specialist. “Recently, there has been a growth in the use of permanent magnet motors because of the energy savings offered over induction motors. These new AC drives have the ability to control both interior permanent magnet and surface permanent magnet motors leading to energy savings from both the drive and the improved efficiency of the motor.”

“TotalFORCE technology enables users to take a proactive approach in improving machine uptime,” noted Brad Arenz, product manager. “The drives can deliver information about the status of an application to the control system, which can be critical for reducing downtime and increasing productivity.” They were previously designed for 160 to 3,000 horsepower applications. The expanded power range makes them suited for large power applications such as pumps and fans requiring harmonic mitigation, and regenerative applications requiring anti-sway functionality, such as cranes and hoists.

Headquartered in Milwaukee, Rockwell Automation is the world’s largest company dedicated to industrial automation and information. It employs 23,000 people serving customers in more than 80 countries.
