Sumitomo (SHI) Cryogenics of America, Inc., a provider of cryocoolers for superconducting magnets in magnetic resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance equipment, has promoted Mark Derakhshan to president and chief executive officer.
He succeeds David Dedman, who retired, and will be responsible for guiding the strategy, policy and operations in five SCAI facilities across the USA. Formerly the chief operating officer, Derakshan joined the company in 2019 as director of engineering, leading new product development after more than 20 years of progressive engineering and managerial experience in the healthcare diagnostic imaging industry, including 14 years in MRI magnet design and development
Unlike regular electromagnets, superconducting magnets transport electrical current without losing energy. This superconductivity is typically achieved by cooling the magnet to very low temperatures using liquid helium and using cryocoolers to control the temperature.
Part of the Precision Equipment Division of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd., SHI Cryogenics Group provides cryogenic and vacuum solutions to the medical, semiconductor, flat panel, general coating and research industries. The American branch is based in Allentown, PA, with other locations in Illinois, California and Texas. See www.shicryogenics.com.
