Festo Designs New Linear Electric Actuators, Builds Manufacturing Lines

30% lighter than larger units plus magnetic deflection of cover strip & new manufacturing lines

Innovative design and new global manufacturing lines are key elements in a new generation of linear electric actuators from Festo. They can improve axis performance for machine designers while new production lines ensure supply.

In the new ELGD series, the Cartesian-handling-system mechanical axes include tooth belt actuators and ball screw models making them suitable to most electromechanical handling tasks. The actuators are designed to deliver exceptional load bearing capacity and torsional rigidity, long service life and increased reliability in multiple industrial handling situations from dirty to cleanroom environments.

While Festo makes many types of actuators including electric, hydraulic and pneumatic technologies, its electric linear actuators use an electric motor to power the movement of a lead screw or a rack and pinion. For the ELGD products, Festo inlaid the bearings into the aluminum extrusion and extended bearings to the full width of the axis. The design enhancement enables high loads in a compact footprint so that machine builders can pack even more powerful tooth belt or ball screw axes in smaller footprint systems.

Another innovation is the magnetic deflection of the cover strip, which eliminates mechanical wear and further reduces the likelihood of particle emissions.

Next year, the series will be integrated into Festo’s online tool for multi-axis handling system sizing and selection, enabling users to design a complete cartesian solution in under 20 minutes, including CAD models and documentation. See www.festo.com
