APEC Sessions Explore Latest Magnetics Design Principles for High-Frequency Power Conversion

Capacity audience is expected for a magnetics industry session focused on high-frequency power conversion design challenges at APEC 2020 in New Orleans next month. A popular pre-conference workshop on the subject is also scheduled.

The Power Sources Manufacturers Association (PSMA) Magnetics Committee is sponsoring the industry session addressing magnetics design applications for high-frequency power conversion. It will feature seven presentations by industry experts focusing on optimizing the design of high-frequency magnetics, according to Ed Herbert, session chair.

Topics will cover optimized inductor designs for DC/DC buck converters from 150 kHz to 3 MHz using distributed gap core materials, a planar transformer design tutorial, combined inductor and transformer design for resonant converters, design space of flyback transformers, and magnetics design considerations for wireless or contactless power transfer for EV charging and data center servers directly from MV DC grid. It is one of several PSMA-sponsored meetings during the week.

Another key event focused on magnetics at APEC will be the fifth “Power Magnetics @ High Frequency” pre-conference workshop which aims to identify the latest improvements in magnetic materials, coil (winding) design, construction and fabrication, evaluation and characterization techniques and modelling and simulation tools. The workshop will target the advancements that are deemed necessary by the participants for power magnetics in order to meet the technical expectations and requirements of new market applications for higher operating frequencies and emerging topologies that are being driven by continuous advances in circuits topologies and semi-conductor devices.

APEC 2020 will be held March 15-19 in New Orleans. For more info, see www.apec-conf.org
