Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. has begun accepting orders for prototypes of a high-performance electric motor still under development that is designed for the high power-density needed by makers of automobiles and other types of e-mobility vehicles including motorcycles. An interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), the compact unit can generate up to 200 kW in output, says the company.
A high-efficiency segment conductor along with advanced casting and processing technologies that it has cultivated over many years have enabled the motor’s industry-leading power density, said the company. It plans to customize the prototype to the specific needs of individual customers and deliver in short time spans utilizing production technology that the company flexibly adapts to its various product groups. Through that strategy, Yamaha expects to deepen its knowledge of evolving market needs by adapting the motor to the requirements of individual customers.
Output of the motor can range from 35 kW to 200, with options for water cooling or oil cooling. The 35kW prototype is shown above. The company started taking orders for it in February. A video of the new motor is available on YouTube at this link: https://youtu.be/sC9bC3e6_mY.
