JLMAG Forays Into Market for Flexible Magnets

JL Mag headquarters in Ganzhou, China

JL Mag Rare-Earth Company, a leading producer of multiple types of magnets based in Ganzhou, Jianxi, China, has established a Rubber Soft Magnetic Division with aims to grow into becoming one of the main suppliers of flexible magnets globally in several years. The move is part of a diversification strategy to capture more business involving magnetic materials with its automotive clientele while breaking into new markets for an expanded product line.

The first phase of an advanced intelligent production line for rubber soft magnets is currently under construction and trial production. Focusing on research, production and sales for the sector, the company plans to gradually expand its production capacity and expects to become one of the main suppliers in the rubber soft magnet industry by 2028.

The plant is being constructed by Jiangxi Jincheng Permanent Magnet New Materials Co., Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of JL Mag Rare-Earth Co., Ltd. The project site is located in the New Energy Vehicle Science and Technology City Industrial Park of Ganzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone.

Building on the traditional strontium and barium ferrite rubber soft magnets, the company has innovatively integrated a variety of industry-leading rare earth permanent magnet technologies such as neodymium-iron-boron, cerium-iron-boron, and samarium-iron-nitrogen, pursuing advancements in magnetic material performance and durability.

It has mastered the production technologies for the full range of rubber soft magnetic materials, reports the company, and has built full-process intelligent production lines plus flexible test lines to establish the coexistence of large-scale production and personalized customization. Advanced internal mixing and calendering processes enable product width to reach 1350mm, thickness up to 3.5mm, and batch fluctuation of magnetic performance rated at less than 3%. Key indicators including magnetic performance uniformity, mechanical strength, weather resistance, and surface consistency have all reached the industry-leading level, say officials.

Entry into the rubber soft magnetic industry is a key aspect of JLMAG’s strategy of diversification in types of magnetic material. For example, in the automotive field, its sintered NdFeB products are applied to the powertrains of new energy vehicles — drive motors, while rubber soft magnets can be widely used in auxiliary functions such as door seals, smart display screen fixation, and sensor brackets. JLMAG aims to harness a synergistic effect to become more deeply embedded in customers’ value chains.

Applications for rubber soft magnetic products in various other industries that it is targeting include uses such as advertising, sealing, shielding, magnetic levitation, consumer electronics, industrial motors, interior decoration, teaching and office supplies, toys, and cultural and creative souvenirs.

JLMAG’s sprawling headquarters site in Ganzhou located in southeast China. Vertically integrated from mining to magnet production, the company has production capacity of 38,000 tons of rare-earth permanent magnet product per year, supplying manufacturers such as Tesla, BMW and Siemens with high-performance N54-grade magnets.
