ELIN Motoren to Become Part of Voith Group

Global industrial manufacturer Voith Group is planning to acquire majority ownership of the Austrian electric motor and generator manufacturer ELIN Motoren GmbH. Closing of the transaction is anticipated to occur at the beginning of the second quarter 2020 pending regulatory approvals. The deal was struck in December, purchase price was not disclosed.

Uwe Knotzer, CEO of Voith Turbo

“The portfolio of ELIN Motoren is an excellent addition to our industrial drive solutions and supports our position as a technology-independent supplier of drive systems. With the 125 years of experience of ELIN Motoren, we will achieve a significant advantage for our customers in drivetrain electrification,” said Dr. Uwe Knotzer, president & CEO of Voith Turbo.

ELIN manufactures electric motors and generators on large and small scale as well as customized solutions for industrial applications. The photo at top depicts an example of its extensive capabilities in the design and manufacture of permanent magnet machines. It focuses on electric machinery, low- and medium-voltage motors and generators especially for wind energy as well as decentralized energy generation. Key markets for the company are wind energy, plastic, tunnel construction and mining, oil and gas, plant engineering as well as power plants.

Wolfgang Landler, CEO of ELIN

“Like ELIN Motoren, Voith, as a long-standing and globally positioned expert in the drive technology sector, follows a digitalization strategy for industrial applications. With the future collaboration between the companies, we will be able to offer our customers, especially in this sector, optimized, integrated concepts ranging from consulting, prototype development to production and service,“ emphasized Wolfgang Landler, CEO.

ELIN was founded in Weiz, Austria, in 1892, where it is headquartered today. The company employs around 900 people and generates a turnover of approximately 120 million euros with production facilities in Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as Hungary.

A manufacturer of generators for wind turbines, it covers both the onshore and the offshore markets with a power range from 750 kW to 6,000 kW. In addition to conventional and doubly fed induction generators, the portfolio also includes synchronous generators with electric and permanent magnet excitation.

Its product range for another key market, plastics and tunneling applications, shown above, includes liquid-cooled, three-phase, low voltage asynchronous motors with a power range of 37 to 2,500 kW, in the standard number of poles and designs.

Its synchronous and asynchronous generators for electric power generation are designed for high efficiency and reliability. The synchronous generators are used worldwide for steam turbines, hydro turbines, gas turbines, as well as for gas and diesel engines. The 4-pole range extends from 3 to 50 MVA and the higher pole ranges from 1 to 30 MVA for voltages from 3.15 to 15 kV.

ELIN also designs and manufactures air and water-cooled asynchronous motors with squirrel cage and slip ring rotors for marine, oil and gas applications, depicted above, and provides drive solutions ranging from 200 kW up to 35 MW.

Voith Group, headquartered in Heidenheim, Germany, has a broad portfolio of products and services serving energy, oil and gas, paper, raw materials, transport and automotive markets. Founded in 1867, the company today has more than 19,000 employees and annual sales of 4.3 billion Euros. With locations in over 60 countries, it is one of the largest family-owned companies in Europe.
