Startup company Infinitum Electric expects to reach a milestone soon – shipment of its first electrically commutated motors, a 15 hp model for plenum fans in the HVAC market. By the end of the year, it expects to have also ramped into production a 2.5 hp and other models.
“We’ll deliver more than 7,500 units over the next 24 months,” says Ben Schuler, founder and CEO of the company, based in Round Rock, TX. “These integrated motors will include the only commercially-available variable frequency drive that uses high-efficiency silicon carbide inverters. Every motor will be cloud connected, providing critical operation data and enabling remote firmware updates.”
Founded in 2016, Infinitum is on the verge of transitioning from a developer to also being a manufacturer with its sights set on introducing its motors into other markets. The company is backed by several technology investment firms, among them Chevron Technology Ventures, and has reported contracts for its motors from several leading fan and appliance manufacturers.
Recent hirings include a new vice president of engineering, Mark Arlitt, who previously led the engineering team at iFly, which pioneered indoor skydiving with its powerful recirculating wind tunnels. Earlier stints included Pratt & Whitney, and Deaton Engineering.
Shams Shaikh, a Stanford-educated mechanical engineer who has worked for other motor start-ups, has come on board as director of product.
“Our patented circuit board stator is what sets us apart and positions us well for success, not just in the HVAC space, but for a variety of applications,” says Schuler.
