Ionic Technologies, a Northern Ireland-based subsidiary of Australian minerals company Ionic Rare Earths, has secured significant new grant funding from the British government that support developing collaborative rare earth element supply chains within the UK. Two grants have been awarded under Innovate UK’s Climates program involving Ionic and several program partners — Vacuumschmelze, Less Common Metals, the Materials Processing Institute and Swansea University.

The Spectris portfolio of analytical instrumentation for evaluating magnetic materials is growing dramatically by acquisition as several recent deals involving Micromeritics, SciAps and Malvern Panalytical come together. The combined companies in the Spectris Group, which also include HBK, Particle Measuring Systems and Servomex, now cover a greater range of capabilities in particle characterization, materials analysis and testing involving magnetic materials and effects. Additionally, some of its products employ permanent magnets and electromagnetic functionality, adding to its knowledgebase. There are now five companies and 7,600 employees in the group which, overall, serves many markets for precision measurement. […]

Recycling magnets from computer hard drives has garnered the attention — and opened the wallet — of Microsoft’s Climate Innovation Fund. It’s one of several new avenues that Cyclic Materials of Toronto is pursuing to gather more magnets into its supply stream and extend the reach for its technology. The Saskatchewan Research Council is lining up supplies of feedstock to funnel into its new rare earth processing facility in central Canada that is aimed to catalyze a mines-to-magnet supply chain for the country. In recent moves it has forged agreements with Hung Thinh Group to import rare earth carbonate from Vietnam and purchased $3 million worth of stockpiled rare earth material from Vital Metals – adding to previously arranged supplies to come from Commerce Resources’ Ashram property near Quebec. The actions come amidst resolute efforts by the provincial and federal governments to seize the economic opportunities that a domestic rare earths and magnet industry can mean – and by SRC to become an industry leader.  […]
