Marelli Motori, a leading Italy-based manufacturer of industrial motors, generators and electromechanical products, many of which are permanent-magnet topologies, reports several notable placements of its products recently. They involve synchronous permanent-magnet generators for an important hydro plant in Africa, also for a new power plant in Peru, and alternators for power generation equipment destined to provide critical support to avoid hunger in Ukraine. A strategic focus of the company is on permanent magnet technology for industrial power.
In Africa, it supplied two medium voltage synchronous generators, MJHT 800 – 3070kVA, for a new hydropower plant in Zimbabwe. The project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 11,100 tons annually, aligning with the country’s commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable energy future.
“Our synchronous generators will play a crucial role in generating clean, renewable energy for Zimbabwe,” said Wolfgang Ondracsek, sales area manager for Marelli. “We are delighted to be part of this important project.”
In October, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store announced that Marelli Motori sister company Bergen Engines has been awarded what he described as a crucial contract to provide power generating equipment to help meet the humanitarian energy needs of around 1,500,000 people in the Dnipro region of Ukraine this winter. The equipment will be fitted with Marelli Motori alternators.
Funded by the United Nations Development Programme, the project will reinforce Ukraine’s energy infrastructure at a critical time.
“Russia’s war of aggression has destroyed large parts of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. It is absolutely essential to ensure that the Ukrainian people have access to electricity this winter. Norway is now providing funding to secure electricity supplies for some one and a half million people and industrial activities in Ukraine. Bergen Engines won a contract for procurement of power supply equipment in an international tender process and funding for the equipment will be provided under the Nansen Support Programme for Ukraine. It was crucial that we succeeded in getting this important agreement in place, as winter is approaching bringing greater need,” said Store.
In another collaboration with Bergen, in a contract announced December 12, Marelli Motori’s generators will be integrated into a pair of Bergen gas engines destined for the Peruvian utility Promigas. The engines will supply 22MWe of power to help alleviate “energy poverty” amongst the region’s more than 600,000 population. The natural gas generating sets are for a power plant scheduled to commence operation in the first half of 2026.
Equipped with Marelli Motori generators, two 11Mw Bergen generator sets will provide electricity to Peru’s Piera region.
Founded in Arzignano, northern Italy, in 1891, the company enjoys worldwide brand recognition in the marine, oil & gas, power generation, co-generation, hydro and other industrial sectors. Marelli Motori is part of the Power Solutions Division of the British engineering and industrial group, Langley Holdings plc, together with Bergen Engines, Norway, Piller Power Systems, Germany and GKN Hydrogen, Italy.
Reducing energy losses in rotating electrical machines is a key contributor in enhancing conversion efficiency for countless applications, notes the company. The maintenance requirements of rotating equipment also presents a challenge when designing, operating and maintaining power transmission drivetrains.
With the world now focusing on preserving critical resources and reducing emissions, there is a growing demand in many industries for electrical equipment that overcomes these challenges, achieving high efficiency with compact layout and simplified drivetrains. A viable solution in multiple fields is offered by permanent magnet technology, the focus of a new strategic initiative by the company.
It employs around 500 people and operates a main manufacturing facility in Italy with owned subsidiaries in the United States, Germany, South Africa and Malaysia and has an extended sales, distribution, and service network across four continents, supplying its products in more than 120 countries.
