Size Matters at TI: New Magnetic Packaging Technology Shrinks Power Modules; Develops Tiniest MCU Yet

Utilizing its proprietary MagPack integrated magnetic packaging technology, Texas Instruments has introduced a series of six new power modules designed to improve power density, enhance efficiency and reduce EMI. TI engineers have shrunk the size of the modules by up to 23% compared to other modules and up to 50% smaller than their previous models, enabling designers of industrial, enterprise and communications applications to achieve previously impossible performance levels. Three of the six new devices rank as the smallest 6A power modules available, supplying an industry-leading power density of nearly 1A per 1mm2 of area, said TI. […]

Proximity Effect Used to Synthesize Ferroelectric Materials

Ferroelectrics are special materials with polarized positive and negative charges — like a magnet has north and south poles — that can be reversed when external electricity is applied. The materials will remain in these reversed states until more power is applied, making them useful for data storage and wireless communication applications. Now, turning a non-ferroelectric material into one may be possible simply by stacking it with another ferroelectric material, according to a team led by scientists from Penn State who demonstrated the phenomenon, called proximity ferroelectricity. Zenno Superconducting Magnetic Torquers Aim to Refine Satellite Positioning

Superconducting magnetic torquers for high-precision satellite positioning from Zenno Astronautics in Auckland, New Zealand are bringing a new application for high-temperature superconductor tape into the spotlight. The novel devices are attracting innovation funding from Asia-Pacific sources and are set to use HTS tape from Faraday Factory Japan that can conduct electrical currents with zero electrical resistance and an extremely high current density of several hundred amperes per square millimeter.

The company’s Z01 torquer scales to address satellites from 50kg up to space station sized, powering their frequent needs to make spatial adjustments while in orbit. The torquer presents a fuel-free “non-propellant” solution that in 2023 became the first such device to go into space. […]

Magnetron Leader CPI Electron Devices Now Part of TransDigm

CPI Electron Device Businesss is the new name for one of the world’s largest producers of magnetrons and a prolific developer of electromagnetic systems for aerospace and defense markets, as a result of its acquisition by TransDigm from Communications & Power Industries. Before it was spun out from CPI in mid-2024 and acquired by TransDigm for about $1.385 billion, it was formerly the Electron Device Business of Varian Associates and has long been a global manufacturer of electronic components and subsystems including radio frequency and microwave products. Now CPI-EDB operates as one of the more than 50 companies owned by Transdigm which primarily provide aircraft components for commercial and military fleets around the world.  […]
