Low Power Key to Ultra-Sensitive 3D Magnetic Sensor from AKM

Asahi Kasei Microdevices Corporation (AKM) has developed a highly sensitive 3-axis magnetic sensor that operates at extremely low levels of power consumption, making it particularly suitable for designers of wearable virtual reality devices to improve motion tracking accuracy.

According to research that AKM conducted in December, it sets new marks for ultra-low noise and ultra-low power consumption performance by such a device. Using tunnel magnetoresistive sensing, the AK09940A is a 3-axis electronic magnetometer in which the sensor element, signal processing circuit, AD converter, etc. are incorporated into an ultra-small package, and the measured magnetic vector is digitally output in 18-bits for each of the X, Y, and Z axes.

Its ability to precisely measure minute magnetic field fluctuations, magnetic field leakage, and magnetic field distortion with three axes makes it ideal for applications such as fault detection and position detection in unspecified weak magnetic fields. Furthermore, its ultra-low power consumption makes it a perfect match for 3-axis magnetic measurement in wearable devices and IoT devices that use small-capacity batteries.
