Quantum Design Acquires Oxford NanoScience Joining Two Leading Cryogenic Companies  
Quantum Design has acquired the Oxford NanoScience division of Oxford Instruments. Priced at £60m cash which is equivalent to about one year of Oxford Nano’s revenue, the acquisition unites the portfolios and expertise of two industry leaders with a combined legacy of more than 100 years of experience and innovation in cryogenics, materials science, and microscopy. The shared product catalog provides automated materials characterization with automated field and temperature control, ultra-low temperature sub-kelvin cryostats and dilution refrigerators, high-field superconducting magnets and a full range of optical cryostats.

Andritz Expands Turbo Generator Production, also Acquires Sanzheng Induction Heating 
Magnetic technology looms large in two recent developments at Austrian international technology group Andritz. One involves a major expansion to its production of turbo generators, the other is acquisition of a majority stake in induction heating specialist company Sanzheng in China whose equipment is used particularly in the production of electrical steel.

Azimuth thrusters, typically employing powerful neodymium permanent-magnet motors, have become a major tool for electrifying maritime propulsion. Kongsberg Maritime, a pioneering leader in the technology, has recently extended the range of its underwater mountable, permanent magnet azimuth thrusters (UUC PM) and is preparing to extend it further with even higher power models. Electric towing winches are another area in which the company is applying permanent magnet technology to expand electrification on the sea.
